Pilgrim’s ampulla (lead flask), found in a nearby field where it may have been left after the sprinkling of holy water to protect crops or livestock. The flask was made c.1300-1500. It bears the letter W, associated with the cult of Our Lady of Walsingham, perhaps reinforced by the symbolism of a double V: virgo virginum – virgin of virgins – invoked in the last of the medieval Advent antiphons.
